ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in Toronto and currently based in Brooklyn, Stephanie Temma Hier is known for original work that combines oil painting with ceramic sculpture. Her practice pairs hyperrealist still-life paintings with whimsical or uncanny sculptural elements. Subjects like everyday objects, food, and body parts lend a visually rich and surreal quality to Hier’s work, which delves into themes of consumption, the passage of time, and the coexistence of images from different eras. By making her own glazes for her ceramic pieces, Hier is able to take a scientific and thorough approach to experimenting with textures and materials. Inspired by the internet, libraries, and personal photographs, she combines images from the past and present to create a sense of timelessness.
